La Cocumella - Best for history and old-world charm

La Cocumella is one of Sorrento's most characterful hotels, occupying a historic property surrounded by lush gardens and Mediterranean planting. Its history stretches back centuries, and that sense of the past remains part of the experience, with traditional interiors and individually designed suites.

The hotel also has its own historic sailing boat, Vera, which can be chartered for private trips along the Amalfi Coast and towards Capri. For travellers who prefer somewhere with genuine history and personality rather than a conventional luxury-resort feel, La Cocumella makes a memorable base for exploring the peninsula.

Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria - Best for classic Sorrento glamour

Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria has been overlooking the Gulf of Naples since the 19th century, occupying three historic villas surrounded by extensive gardens in the centre of Sorrento. The interiors retain a distinctly Italian sense of grandeur, while its position makes it particularly convenient for exploring the town.

The hotel's terraces and gardens provide plenty of opportunities to enjoy the views, with Terrazza Vittoria an obvious choice for an evening drink. It is the classic Sorrento hotel for travellers drawn to historic architecture, old-world glamour and a central location.

Hotel Central Wellness Sorrento - Best for wellness

Hotel Central Wellness Sorrento takes a different approach to the traditional Sorrento hotel, placing wellness at the centre of the experience. The boutique-sized property has just over 55 rooms, alongside a full spa, rooftop terrace, swimming pool, gym and wellness facilities including private saunas in selected rooms.

We stayed here ourselves, and our fourth-floor room had sweeping views towards the sea and Mount Vesuvius, as well as a private sauna and a spacious sitting area. The bathroom included an atmospheric shower with massage jets and adjustable lighting, while the room's blue-and-white detailing gave it a distinctly Italian feel.

The pool is a good size for a boutique hotel, with loungers, a bar and views across the surrounding landscape. We also experienced the hotel's private wellness session, which included a jacuzzi with waterfall, Turkish sauna, green tea and a full-body massage.

The rooftop is another highlight, particularly for the views, while the restaurant offers seafood, pasta, salads and lighter dishes that fit naturally with the hotel's wellness focus. It may not have the historic grandeur of properties such as the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria or Bellevue Syrene, but it offers a quieter, more contemporary alternative with a strong emphasis on relaxation.

Marina Piccola 73

Best for an intimate stay

Marina Piccola 73 is a small, family-run property housed in a restored 19th-century building overlooking Sorrento's harbour. With just five rooms, it feels considerably more intimate than the town's larger hotels, with colourful interiors, antiques and original architectural details. The Deluxe Room with Terrace is particularly appealing for its private outdoor space and views towards Mount Vesuvius.

Hotel Bellevue Syrene

Best for historic luxury

Hotel Bellevue Syrene combines historic Italian architecture with a more contemporary interpretation of luxury. Rooms and suites vary from frescoed ceilings and period details to private pools and terraces, while the property also has a small spa, hammam and access to historic Roman remains. The larger Lauren Suite has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a kitchen, making it particularly practical for families or longer stays. Breakfast is simple, while the overall feel is closer to a stylish private residence than a traditional full-service hotel.

Palazzo Marziale

Best for staying in the historic centre

Palazzo Marziale occupies a 15th-century palazzo in the heart of Sorrento, close to the Cloister of San Francesco. The family-owned property has just 13 rooms and suites, some with balconies or private terraces overlooking the Bay of Naples. Its wine cellar is built into Roman ruins beneath the building, adding another layer of history to the stay.

Ara Maris

Best for resort-style facilities

Ara Maris offers a contemporary take on the Sorrento hotel, combining 49 rooms with an outdoor pool, gardens and a spa featuring an indoor pool, sauna and Turkish bath. Guests also have access to partner beach clubs along the coast. For something above the hotel, Lumi Sky Bar provides views across the Gulf of Naples and works well for an evening drink.
